The distribution of extremal points of Gaussian scalar fields
We consider the signed density of the extremal points of (two-dimensional)
scalar fields with a Gaussian distribution. We assign a positive unit charge to
the maxima and minima of the function and a negative one to its saddles. At
first, we compute the average density for a field in half-space with Dirichlet
boundary conditions. Then we calculate the charge-charge correlation function
(without boundary). We apply the general results to random waves and random
surfaces. Furthermore, we find a generating functional for the two-point
function. Its Legendre transform is the integral over the scalar curvature of a
4-dimensional Riemannian manifold.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, corrected published versio
A simplified picture for Pi electrons in conjugated polymers : from PPP Hamiltonian to an effective molecular crystal approach
An excitonic method proper to study conjugated oligomers and polymers is
described and its applicability tested on the ground state and first excited
states of trans-polyacetylene, taken as a model. From the Pariser-Parr-Pople
Hamiltonian, we derive an effective Hamiltonian based on a local description of
the polymer in term of monomers; the relevant electronic configurations are
build on a small number of pertinent local excitations. The intuitive and
simple microscopic physical picture given by our model supplement recent
results, such as the Rice and Garstein ones. Depending of the parameters, the
linear absorption appears dominated by an intense excitonic peak.Comment: 41 Pages, 6 postscript figure
Some model experiments on continental shelf waves
This paper describes some model experiments that verify the theoretical form of continental shelf waves. Both the dispersion relationship and the positions of the orbital gyres are confirmed. The existence of a maximum frequency for each mode, with a corresponding zero group velocity, may be of significance for field observations
Synthesis of Yb-doped Sc2O3 nanocrystalline powders
International audienceWe report the preparation of nanocrystalline Yb:Sc2O3 powders with an ultimate intent to make transparent Yb:Sc2O3 ceramics for laser applications. Precursors were synthesized by a coprecipitation method from a mixed solution of scandium and ytterbium nitrates using aqueous ammonium hydrogen carbonate as precipitant. The effects of the precipitation process on the powders' characteristics were studied. The phase evolution, the structure and the morphological characteristics of the different precipitates and calcined precursors were studied by means of TG/DTA, XRD and SEM methods. Carbonate precursors were transformed into pure Yb:Sc2O3 phase after a thermal treatment ≥700°C for 2 hours. The particles of the as-prepared nanocrystalline Yb:Sc2O3 powders are spherical and narrow size distributed. Their average diameter is lower than 50nm
Signed zeros of Gaussian vector fields-density, correlation functions and curvature
We calculate correlation functions of the (signed) density of zeros of
Gaussian distributed vector fields. We are able to express correlation
functions of arbitrary order through the curvature tensor of a certain abstract
Riemann-Cartan or Riemannian manifold. As an application, we discuss one- and
two-point functions. The zeros of a two-dimensional Gaussian vector field model
the distribution of topological defects in the high-temperature phase of
two-dimensional systems with orientational degrees of freedom, such as
superfluid films, thin superconductors and liquid crystals.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, uses iopart.cls, improved presentation, to appear

Persistent holes in a fluid
We observe stable holes in a vertically oscillated 0.5 cm deep aqueous
suspension of cornstarch for accelerations a above 10g. Holes appear only if a
finite perturbation is applied to the layer. Holes are circular and
approximately 0.5 cm wide, and can persist for more than 10^5 cycles. Above a =
17g the rim of the hole becomes unstable producing finger-like protrusions or
hole division. At higher acceleration, the hole delocalizes, growing to cover
the entire surface with erratic undulations. We find similar behavior in an
aqueous suspension of glass microspheres.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
Basins of attraction on random topography
We investigate the consequences of fluid flowing on a continuous surface upon
the geometric and statistical distribution of the flow. We find that the
ability of a surface to collect water by its mere geometrical shape is
proportional to the curvature of the contour line divided by the local slope.
Consequently, rivers tend to lie in locations of high curvature and flat
slopes. Gaussian surfaces are introduced as a model of random topography. For
Gaussian surfaces the relation between convergence and slope is obtained
analytically. The convergence of flow lines correlates positively with drainage
area, so that lower slopes are associated with larger basins. As a consequence,
we explain the observed relation between the local slope of a landscape and the
area of the drainage basin geometrically. To some extent, the slope-area
relation comes about not because of fluvial erosion of the landscape, but
because of the way rivers choose their path. Our results are supported by
numerically generated surfaces as well as by real landscapes
A -adic RanSaC algorithm for stereo vision using Hensel lifting
A -adic variation of the Ran(dom) Sa(mple) C(onsensus) method for solving
the relative pose problem in stereo vision is developped. From two 2-adically
encoded images a random sample of five pairs of corresponding points is taken,
and the equations for the essential matrix are solved by lifting solutions
modulo 2 to the 2-adic integers. A recently devised -adic hierarchical
classification algorithm imitating the known LBG quantisation method classifies
the solutions for all the samples after having determined the number of
clusters using the known intra-inter validity of clusterings. In the successful
case, a cluster ranking will determine the cluster containing a 2-adic
approximation to the "true" solution of the problem.Comment: 15 pages; typos removed, abstract changed, computation error remove
